- I. HELPFUL HINTS
- ****************
-
- 1. To save addresses in memorised cheques, go to the memorised
- transaction list, highlight the transaction, and click in the
- lock column.
- 2. In Budgets, you can display subcategories by clicking on the "+"
- next to the parent category.
- 3. Use small font size, especially in the Portfolio view, to avoid
- text display issues.
- 4. To print the Account List click on the All Types tab, select File,
- and then Print List.
- 5. The Transfer Funds form does not transfer to investment accounts.
- 6. If you need to free up more hard drive space, you may delete the
- files listed below without harming the program.
- o Tutorials: You can delete the entire Tutorials directory.
- o Messages about other Intuit products and Cheque Art files:
-
- QP.WMF QI.WMF PQ.WMF DLX.WMF TT.WMF
- ART1.WMF ART2.WMF ART3.WMF ART4.WMF ART5.WMF
- ART6.WMF ART7.WMF ART8.WMF
-
- Deleting these files means you won't be able to have scenic
- backgrounds on for the Write Cheques screen or read product
- descriptions when you try to activate a product you do not own
- from the Add On menu.
- 7. If you are working under Windows NT, we recommend turning Auto
- Completion off. In the register, click Options, QuickFill and
- clear the Automatic Completion of Fields box.
- 8. COMPUTER REBOOT PROBLEMS: If the Quicken CD is in your CD-ROM drive
- and your computer doesn't boot, remove the CD and reboot. Put the
- CD back in the drive once DOS has been loaded. Your computer is
- attempting to load the SCSI BIOS before it loads the system BIOS;
- removing the CD will resolve this problem.
- 9. Regarding the Quicken 4 Online User Guide: There are MANY places
- on the screen where the mouse is active, including hypertext. It
- will change to a hand when it is active. Make sure you read the
- first topic in the Guide, "How to use the on-screen guide", which
- explains the things you can do.

- Handling and cleaning your Quicken CD-ROM
-
- Please observe the following precautions when handling and cleaning
- your Quicken CD-ROM:
-
- - Do not touch the data side of the CD-ROM (the side with no printing).
- - Do not apply paper labels or write on any part of the CD-ROM.
- - If dust or fingerprints get on the CD-ROM, wipe with a soft dry cloth
- from the center of the disc to the edge. Don't use cleaning solvents.
- - Do not place the CD-ROM where it will be subjected to sunlight or
- high temperature.
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Some common installation problems are caused by insufficient memory
- (less than 4MB of RAM), hard disk space, or conflicts with Terminate
- and Stay Resident programs (TSRs). Save time by resolving these
- situations before continuing:
-
- o Make sure you are not running other programs that take up memory
- while you install.
-
- o On your hard disk, you need at least 500K on the drive where
- Windows is located and 24 MB on the drive where Quicken is
- located (these are usually, but not always the same drive).
-
- o Turn off any TSR's.
-
- To shorten installation time, make sure you have no other Windows
- applications (including screen savers) or DOS windows running
- during Quicken installation.
-
-
-
- III. CONVERTING DATA FILES FROM PREVIOUS QUICKEN VERSIONS
- *********************************************************
-
- NOTE: Quicken for Windows 4 automatically converts data files from: DOS
- Version 6 and Windows Versions 2 and 3.
-
-
-
- IV. Troubleshooting Common Printing Problems
- ********************************************
-
- See the onscreen User's Guide for more solutions to common printing
- problems.
-
- 1. If Quicken behaves as though you have printed successfully but
- nothing comes out of the printer, check the printer and the Print
- Manager for stalled print jobs.
-
- 2. Verify that the font is True Type or a printer resident font.
-
- 3. If you experience problems with the drivers listed below, we
- recommend that you install these substitute drivers. If you are not
- sure how to install drivers in the Windows Control Panel, please
- consult your Windows Manual.
-
- Print Driver Substitute Driver
- Canon BJ 130 IBM Proprinter
- Canon BJ 200 Canon BJ 10e or IBM Proprinter
- Citizen GSX-140 Epson FX-80 or FX-86e
- Citizen GSX-220/230 IBM Proprinter X24e
- Epson Stylus 300/800 Epson LQ 870 or LQ 850
- Panasonic KX-P1180 Epson FX-80 or FX-86e
- Panasonic KX-P1624 Epson LQ-510
- Panasonic KX-P1123/1124 Epson LQ-510
- HP Deskjet 500c/550c **See note below
-
- After you've installed the substitute driver, choose Printer Setup
- in Quicken to select the new driver. Before printing, reset your
- printer by turning it off and on.
-
- HP DESKJET 500c or 550c: If you experience problems printing from
- Quicken to an HP Deskjet 500c or 550c, check your driver version
- number:
-
- 1. In Quicken, choose File, Printer Setup.
- 2. Choose either Cheque or Report printer setup.
- 3. Click Settings to see the driver name and version.
- 4. If the driver version number in the lower right hand corner is
- not Version 3.0 or later, call HP to receive an updated driver.
-
- 4. The Tradeline Stock Guide is currently incompatible with the
- following print drivers:
-
- HP LaserJet 4P version 31.V1.25
- HP DeskJet 560 ColorSmart version 4.0
-
- 5. When printing topics/chapters from the onscreen User's Guide (on A4
- paper only), the graphic images that will not fit on one page will
- print again on the next page. The second page will always contain
- the complete graphic image. Note: This will NOT occur on a Windows
- 95 system.
-
-
-
-
- V. GENERAL PROTECTION FAULTS
- ****************************
-
- General Protection Faults, (GPFs) are messages that are generated by
- Windows. Here are troubleshooting tips for the most common causes in
- Quicken.
-
- 1. Insufficient memory-insufficient system resources.
- o Press Ctrl-Esc to go to the Windows Task List.
- o Exit all applications except for the Program Manager to free
- memory and system resources used by other applications.
-
- 2. Conflicts with Terminate and Stay Resident programs (TSRs) and
- problems with certain Device Drivers.
-
- Check for potentially incompatible TSRs or Drivers in your
- autoexec.bat and config.sys files. You can test for incompat-
- ibilities by "REMarking out"TSRs and Drivers and restarting your
- computer. If this solves the problem, restore the TSRs or Drivers
- one by one until the incompatibility is found. "REMarking out"
- means inserting the letters REM at the beginning of the line
- which loads the TSR or Device Driver.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTE!
- ** DO NOT REMARK LINES THAT WILL AFFECT HARD DISK COMPRESSION,
- DISK PARTITIONING or EXTERNAL DRIVES ETC. **
-
- You can also try setting up a 'minimum' configuration by renaming
- your existing autoexec and config to autoexec.old and config.old
- and creating new ones that look like this.
-
- CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT
- device=c:\windows\himem.sys path=c:\dos;c:\windows
- files=40 prompt $p$g
- buffers=30 set temp=c:\
- stacks=9,256
-
- 3. Inconsistencies or damage to the program and/or data files.
-
- Damage to your data files can be caused by problems with your hard
- disk. You need to resolve any hardware problems before you can
- solve data file problems permanently.
-
- PROBLEMS WITH YOUR HARD DISK
-
- a. Type CHKDSK at the C:\> prompt to check for lost allocation
- units or cross linked files. If any are found, you may need to
- consult your hardware technician or DOS manual to correct
- them before continuing.
-
- b. In Quicken, create a new file and perform the tasks that
- generated the GPF. If you do not get a GPF, this may indicate
- that the GPF was caused by a damaged data file.
-
- c. Run the Rebuild utility on the new copy of your file. The
- Rebuild Utility can be found in your Quicken subdirectory.
- Instructions on how to run the Rebuild Utility can be found in
- Help under Rebuild and in the REBUILD.TXT file in your Quicken
- program directory.
-
- d. In Quicken, click File, File Operations and Copy. Save the copy
- of your data to a new name. Load the new copy and see if the
- GPF still occurs. If it does not, Copy File was probably able
- to repair the damage.
-
-
-
- VI. PROBLEMS WITH AUDIO AND VIDEO EFFECTS
- *****************************************
-
- 1. Please check with your manufacturer, especially if you are using
- Windows 95, to make sure you have the latest driver for your video
- board or sound card.
-
- 2. Talking Tutorials videos are incompatible with the Corel SCSI
- driver. Replace your Corel MSCDEX driver with the MSCDEX driver
- supplied with DOS. Your version of Windows will explain how.
-
- 3. Quicken 4 for Windows CD-ROM will support the PC speaker drivers,
- but because the Talking Tutorials use up a lot of system
- resources, you may find that video/audio performance is slow or
- jerky.
-
- 4. Due to the amount of resources necessary to run Talking Tutorials,
- you can't run more than one instance of these Tutorials at a
- time. If you do run more than one instance at a time, the feature
- will not work well. Also, Win 3.1 users should close all other
- non-Quicken programs while running the Talking Tutorials,
- especially FAX and Send/Receive network activity, as the
- multimedia in the tutorials can terminate with the following
- message: "Specified command has been carried out".
-
- 5. Videos will not look good on a Toshiba computer running under 256
- colours. The Toshiba maps to 16 colours by default when running
- videos to save Windows resources.
-
- 6. Video performance is jerky on any system running on an LCD display.
- Even if you bypass the LCD to run on a full screen SVGA monitor,
- performance will be slow due to the LCD driver in your system.
-
- 7. If you are using an ATI Mach 32 local bus video board, you may
- experience visual display problems running the videos. If so,
- and you are running Windows 3.1 or 3.11, please reinstall the
- Video for Windows included on the Quicken 4 for Windows CD-ROM.
- Video for Windows is included with Windows 95, so you probably
- need a new video driver from ATI.
-
- 8. If you are running Windows 95, a 256 colour minimum setting is
- recommended for viewing the Talking Tutorials. Though they will
- work under the 16 colour setting, they are not very nice to view
- at that setting.
-
- 8. If you are using OS/2, make sure you are running in a WIN-OS/2
- Full Screen Window, not a WIN-OS/2 Window.
